You’re going down to the wire on filing your tax return, but you’re not going to hit Wednesday’s deadline.

Relax, just ask the IRS for more time. About 10 million requests for extensions are filed each year, according to the editors at Bank Rate Monitor.

All you have to do to get an extra six months is to file Form 4868, Application for Automatic Extension of Time to File.

Just apply online here, or by mail.

Remember, an extension of time is not an extension to pay. If you owe taxes, you need to write the check, or at least pay a close estimate of the final amount, when asking for the filing extension.
